The flight to washington

I didn't know how much I missed plane rides so much until we took off. We were on a very small plane, it had one seat on the left and two on the right. I couldn't stand up straight without my head hitting the roof of the plane, it was nuts! First off I wasn't to excited about where I was sitting but then I eventually got to move into a better spot once everyone sat down.

The sights were pretty nice, not to much just the average things,, but seeing them at that height makes it completely different. It looked like one of those little model sets of a town. I was lucky enough to get the seat that had the wing to my left and behind me a little. It was exactly what I wanted.

Well now were waiting in the airport for the next flight, in total we had a six hour layover. So about five-ish more hours to go. Ended up buying an 24 hour internet connection for 7.99 US and bought some nice wendy's...mmmmm... not much more to say not gonna lie just that I am EXTREMELY excited!

Until PARIS :)

The morning up till Toronto airport!

We are currently sitting in the terminal and it is very hot. Getting through security wasn’t much of a hastle, the only thing was one of our passports had a little trouble getting through. I had absolutely no problem though, besides being nervous when asked “Where are you going, does your family know your here, who paid for the ticket, whats in Europe, when are you coming home?” Not a very welcoming bunch of people but it was ok.

Getting up this morning was ok, it was early but oh well. Went to timmies then to school where we loaded the bus and off we went. It was still very dark and as we were driving I was extremely tired and wanted to sleep, but the excitement was to much to close my eyes. I didn’t get many pics but I did capture one that I liked. I took it on the bus when it was still dark with some creative twisting of the camera.

We walked into the airport and to be honest i didn’t really know what I was doing, thank god for the other experienced flyers. After going through the usual system of an airport we found ourselves running to the washrooms and looking for that famous coffee cup. Grabbed some coffee and pulled the computer out!

Boarding in about five minutes, time to pack up!

The last sleep

OMG

Its 9:12 on Wednesday night and I'm in bed about to TRY and sleep. I feel very tired but at the same time my mind doesn't seem to want to stop racing!

I am so excited for tomorrow.. I've been waiting for this night for so long. From the beginning I wished it was sooner but now that its time I realize all the time waiting and getting excited has just made it that much better.

One of the huge things that I have been excited for would have to be Vimy. Vimy is where Canada made history. We did what no one else could do. Visiting the memorial site will be, truly, an honor, and it will be a moment of remembrance. Remembrance to think back on seeing pictures, video and reading text on/from the war, seeing the young Canadians in battle and fighting for their country, for a humane world.

That is just one thing, and the night of that day I am sure I will be writing a full on report on the days details including pictures.

I think I should sleep, getting up at three... :)

Till tomorrow

So SOON

So Its the twenty fourth meaning that there is around four days left on the countdown! (not including today or the day we leave!). I am starting to get very very excited!!! Tomorrow I am going into town to buy some little things like boxers, a book, netbook and all that junk. I was thinking about how much clothes to bring and if i even had enough...

I'm not sure what book I'm going to buy, even what kind of book but I think I am going to lean away from my usual genre. I am going to read Anne Frank, I was suppose to read it a long time ago but never got around to it. I'm sure with the plane ride to Washington, six hour layover and then the flight to Paris will be long enough, not mention Monday and Tuesday :P. I just hope there are not to many distractions on the plane to keep me away from the book, one can only hope!

SAD NEWS:

Chances are I will not be getting the Nikon D90 in time for the trip :( tear tear tear. I was really looking forward to having it but I think the D60 will do! There is a possibility that though, that I will get it, all depends on mothers income tax arrival.... eerrrr.

The ash is leaving!

So I've been keeping up with the news on the ash cloud and things seem to be calming down!
I am still a little worried though about all the flights that were canceled and all the people that still have to go to their destinations. I mean there was something like 90 000 canceled flights :l I just wonder how long it will take for the airports to get back on track. We can only hope for the best!

Then there is the second volcano to think about.. Iceland scientist are saying that this other volcano will likely erupt, but it could be anytime, from now up to around 18 months.. So I think we got nothing to worry about :)

Getting This Public

My main goal with this blog is to get people to follow the experience and the events that will be taken place over the course of this trip. There are thousands of Canadians going and I believe that all Canadians should have some kind connection to the celebrations.

I never knew about the celebrations before this trip so I think this could be another way of getting the word out to people and not letting our past die for all of us younger people.

This is the last time it will happen which is a sad fact, but in knowing this we need to make it the best and the most memorable. For me, and possibly all of my generation, we will never forget about the sacrifice that the people, world wide, have made for a safe and humane society. I fear that these facts and events will be slowly forgotten and put to the side. I will hope that for the rest of humanity that this will never go unspoken of and I will be sure to make my kids kids aware of the great sacrifice people have made and that they must never forget.

How it began

In Seventeen days I will be embarking on a twelve day journey to Europe with my peers. We are going to be apart of, what I think is a very, very important event, the celebration of the end of World War II. The sixty-fifth anniversary will be the last main celebration of its kind, making it that much more important.

I go to St.Dominic Catholic Secondary School in Bracebridge Ontario, currently in grade twelve and excited for the future. Ever since grade ten history class I have grown a great appreciation for Canada and everything that its citizens have done for our land.

Near the end of grade 11, last year, there was a presentation for grade tens and elevens about a trip to Europe. I heard it over the announcements a couple days before and thought I might as well check it out. The day came and down to the cafeteria I went, at first there was no way I'd go on a trip to Europe(not that kind of person), but something happened that day that gave me the courage to tell myself I should at least try. The presentation got me excited and gave me a little more information on what exactly the trip was all about. It made me think of my grandpa who was apart of the RCAF during the war and also got me thinking of the different stories I've heard about the war. There were only going to be around twenty students selected to go and we had to fill out a sheet and write a small essay on why we should be chosen. I knew after that presentation I wanted to go, I needed to go. There was a meeting a little while after our deadline for the essays, I was called down to find out I had been chosen to go, that was a very good day. Now I had to save up money, prepare and anxiously wait for the day to come.
